ACA PLANS "OBAMACARE"

Is an ACA Plan Right for YOU?

Affordable Care Act Plans (ACA Plans) are household names such as Blue Cross Blue Shield, Cigna, Ambetter, Anthem, etc. which are major medical plans that are based on TOTAL HOUSEHOLD INCOME.  If the income along with total number of dependents meets the criteria to qualify for a "subsidy" also known as a "tax credit" your premiums may be substantially less or possibly $0 per month.   These plans are available to anyone in the United States.  Also, if the income meets certain criteria you may also qualify for what's known as "Cost Sharing Reduction" which makes your deductibles, copays and out of pocket maximums lower as well.

However, if your income doesn't meet certain criteria for your household and no "subsidy" is available, these plans are full price and the premiums can be very expensive.  Most of our clients that do not qualify for subsidized premiums often look at our alternative to ACA (Obamacare) Plans for other major medical options.

Self Employed/Small Business Owners

The correct number to give an agent for income would be on your 1040 Line 11.

W-2 Earners

The correct number would simply be your salary plus any income earned in your household by your spouse or children if claimed on taxes.

Most Americans think that "Obamacare" is simply for poor people.  What most people aren't aware of is that ALL of your "True Group Policies" are required to be "ACA Compliant" which means all the companies across America that offer "true group health insurance" to their employees are in fact offering "Obamacare."  It's simply through a job and not on the individual "Marketplace."

Please note that in order for a spouse and children to be on an ACA Plan that is qualifying for any amount of "subsidy" you have to file jointly on a tax return and the children have to be claimed as dependents to be on the plan. Children also have to be under the age of 26.

PROS

  • Covers pre-existing conditions day 1.
  • Guaranteed Acceptance (they cannot decline you)
  • Covers 100% of Preventative Care set forth in the ACA Guidelines
  • Plans have a "max-out-pocket" for the insured.
  • Subsidized premiums are offered if the "Total Household Income" meets certain criteria.

CONS

  • Typically, very expensive when no subsidy is provided (Total Household Income doesn't qualify for help)
  • Most plans are HMOs not Nationwide PPOs (very small networks of doctors and hospitals in some areas)
  • Carriers may be here today but pull out of the market tomorrow
